Templates for the ICTP Website
Here we list templates (XHTML and CSS) and graphic files that may be of interest to whom is developing or re-designing web pages and/or portals inside ICTP, according to the approved Working Plan and Content Tree. The information and files are released for internal use.
- XHTML — templates written in eXtended HyperText Markup Language "version 1.0 transitional", that may be used to build the structure of new pages (i.e. the contents, together with proper semantic information) inside the ICTP Website. It's the modern evolution of HTML, with better defined and strict rules, that allows and even "forces" a sharp separation between the structure (semantic) and the appearence (graphic aspect) of any information that is published on the web.
- CSS — templates of Cascading Style Sheets "version 1", that are used to provide various information related to the presentation of web pages (like graphical appearance for displaying and printing, thypograhical settings, dynamical effects for menus, colors and multimedia decorations, etc.), in a way that they look similar to all other pages of the new ICTP Website and provide a homogeneous "ICTP look and feel".
Please note that the use of XHTML and CSS is strongly recommended for all the newly released ICTP web pages (as explicitly stated in the Working Plan) in order to:
- — keep the structure of the web pages as clean as possible, and ready for future improvements (the ICTP web is "compatible with the future"),
-
— allow the access to the information provided in the Website to everybody, regardless of disability. This modern concept of accessibility is strongly promoted by W3C and is also required by law in many countries nowadays (the ICTP web is "accessible to everyone"),
— follow the international recommendations defined by the W3C (the ICTP web is "compliant with web standards"),- — optimize the bandwidth requirements needed for browsing the ICTP Website, with special consideration for the Developing Countries (the ICTP web is "against the digital divide").
-
icons and graphic elements — the new ICTP logo, various icons and pictorial elements for a few categories of web pages (i.e. different page headers, etc.) are provided here, both in a working format (JPEG or GIF) for immediate use and in a source format (Photoshop 7, with layers), for further editing and customization.
The decision to use GIFs and JPEGs instead of the more modern and flexible PNG images (PNG means Portable Network Graphics which is an open format designed to efficiently publish images on the web) has been taken in order to allow also some old browsers, without any support for the PNG format, to see the graphical appearance of our new site (the ICTP web graphics are "backward compatible").
Please read the on-line documentation or contact the ICTP Web Team for further information about all these concepts.
