Biography:
Mr. Johannessen is of Norwegian nationality. Following two years in the Norwegian Air Force
and his MBA studies in Bergen, Norway, he worked 3 years as Export Area Sales Manager for a Norwegian
manufacturing company. Thereafter followed a year with business consulting and reorganization of the
administrative and financial sectors of a private company in trouble.
For 3 years Mr. Johannessen worked in a software company as responsible for administration and finance,
as well as being project manager and key account manager related to the accounting software AGRESSO
developed by the company. Thereafter, for 5 years, Mr. Johannessen was employed by the Norwegian Space
Centre as responsible for finance and administration. In this capacity he served as the national
delegate to the Administrative and Finance Committee of the European Space Agency. In addition to the
activities at the Norwegian headquarter, he led the administrative and financial work at the Andoya
Rocket Range and the Tromsoe Satellite Station and assisted in the development of the new Satellite
Station on the Spitzbergen islands.
Prior to joining ICTP, Mr. Johannessen worked for 5 years as Director of Administration of an
international organization in Brussels, Belgium, with responsibilities as in his present post in
Trieste. The EFTA Surveillance Authority cooperates closely with the European Commission and
overlooks that the EFTA States abide by the European Economic Area Agreement between themselves
and the European Union.
Responsibility:
Supervision of all administrative aspects of the planning and execution of the Centre's activities
and assist the Directorate in the planning and evaluation of these activities.
Overviewing the revision of the Centre's administrative organization with the aim of assuring efficiency
and full exploitation of human resources and computer technology.
Supervision and coordination of the activities of the administrative staff in:
- financial planning of the Centre
- the General Services (including the management of 2 guest houses, and the medical, housing and visa services)
- the procurement of all goods and services requested
- the administrative arrangements required in relation to the Centre's programme activities
- the personnel policies and management
- the Info-Point/Switchboard.
Undertaking of any other administrative task as may be required by the Director.
In addition to the activities listed above, Mr. Johannessen is together with the Director of ICTP
working on strengthening the contacts between ICTP and other institutions in the Trieste area, with
the authorities and the town of Trieste as well as with Italian authorities in Rome.
The exhibitions organized by the Cultural Committee of the Centre, coordination with the other
institutions in the Miramare Science Campus, organization of Open Day for the public, are some
of such activities Administration is involved in.
