Education:

1980 B.Sc.(hons), Monash University, Victoria, Australia.
1980-1982 Ph.D., University of Tasmania, Hobart, Australia.

Biography:

1982-1984: Research associate in the Physics Department, The University Southampton, England.
1984-1986: Research Fellow in the Physics Department, the University of Tasmania.
1986-1988: Guest research scientist at the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP).
1988-1989: C.R.1 associe position in the Laboratoire de Physique Theorique et Hautes Energies (L.P.T.H.E.), Universite Paris 6 et Paris 7, Paris, France.
1989-1992: Research position in the Department of Physics, the Johannes Gutenberg University, Mainz Germany.
1992- : At ICTP.

Responsability:

The ICTS provides informatic services for the ICTP community and for the scientific activities of ICTP. In addition, it takes care of the general IT infrastructure (network and network services).
As head of the Office, apart from coordinating the work of the 12 staff members, Thompson defines the architecture of the services, handles the technical relations with suppliers and contractors, and takes part in the implementation and maintenance of the services.

Collaborations:

The ICT section is presently involved in a collaboration, funded by the Italian Ministry of Research, that aims at evaluating the potential of GRID technologies for economic modelling, and in particular at implementing a pilot national facility for economic data based on the GRID technologies. Other partners include various sections of INFM, Area; a collaboration has been established with UCLA and INFN.
